“God kept me here for a reason.” Rochester Board Member supports her Puerto Rico home

“I wish I could be there.”

Under normal circumstances, Rose Mary Villarrubia Izzo would be in Puerto Rico right now, helping friends and family devastated by Hurricane Maria. However, this past year has been anything but normal for the long-time Red Cross volunteer and Greater Rochester Chapter Board member.

“I went to the doctor because I had a migraine,” she says. “The CT scan said I had a tiny aneurysm. The doctor sent me to a neurologist, who sent me to a neurosurgeon. They discovered I had a Size 6 aneurysm. They told me they start rupturing at Size 4, and they had to operate immediately.”

Rose Mary was hesitant to do the surgery. She was told she had only a 50/50 chance of surviving, and even if she did, she may not be able to walk or talk, and could lose her memory.

“I walked out of the doctor’s office in total devastation,” she says. “But they told me if I didn’t have the surgery, I had a 100% chance of dying.”

So, Rose Mary underwent the brain surgery, followed by several long, difficult months of recuperation. Despite being under doctor’s order to stay as stress-free as possible, Villarrubia Izzo, who has been a part of disaster relief operations including Hurricanes Hugo and George during her 32 years with the Red Cross, worried about her nieces and nephews in Texas after Hurricane Harvey, and her in-laws in Florida as Hurricane Irma made landfall. Then, Hurricane Maria absolutely devastated her birthplace, Puerto Rico, where much of her family still lives.

“Every time I looked at videos, my heart stopped,” she says. “I kept waiting to see if any family members would pop up in the news. One of my cousins found a fish on the top of their house! They lost everything.”

Rose Mary moved with her parents to Rochester when she was five years old, but spent summers and holidays with her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins in Puerto Rico, and her parents moved back after 18 years.

“Dad wanted to stay in Puerto Rico during this devastation and keep an eye on the house,” she said.  Her parents are in their 80s, and she knew that they couldn’t stay in an area with no power, potable water, or functional hospitals after Maria. Rose Mary worked to get them to join her in Rochester. After flights were cancelled six times, she arranged a relief flight, and they arrived safe two weeks ago and are now staying with her daughter. However, Rose Mary felt she needed to do more to help her homeland.

instrumental in helping raise over $100,000 to support Maria
relief efforts during a telethon on September 25
“God kept me here for a reason,” says the deeply religious Villarrubia Izzo. After being convinced
that her medical condition made it impossible for her to go to Puerto Rico herself, Rose Mary began to use connections formed through 30 years with the Rochester City School District and the City of Rochester to help raise financial support for the Red Cross relief operations. She was instrumental in the raising of over $100,000 during a telethon on September 25, and helped ensure that proceeds from the City of Rochester’s ROC Relief event a week later also supported the Red Cross efforts. She represented the Red Cross during a concert at the Diplomat Banquet Center that raised over $5,000, and is currently working on another event with Country/Rock music group, “Stanby”, which will be held on November 26 at Three Heads Brewery, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross.

“I feel very proud that I’m capable health-wise to do it,” Rose Mary said. “I’m sad that I can’t go, but at least I can help from here. That’s why God kept me here. I know I can make a difference.”

Rose Mary started with the Red Cross 32 years ago through the Youth Leadership Program, which she is still involved with today. She says that the only way to truly understand all that she’s seen the Red Cross do for the community is to become a part of it yourself.

“If you can make a difference in someone’s life, you need to do it,” she says. “The purpose of helping pulled me out of a lot of depression, and I’m so happy to be here to do it.”

Giving Something That Means Something

Pi Lamba Phi members Matt Weisbaeck
and Connor Reale
It's been a while since we've put up a new post. Truth is we've been busy throughout the Region. Take this week in Buffalo, Rochester and the Southern Tier, for example. But this is the holiday season, when we encourage everyone to Give Something that Means Something, so as a gift to you we wanted to share the story of some college students learning to do just that.

Pi Lambda Phi member Lee Harmon
The University at Buffalo Chapter of Pi Lambda Phi saw the devastation caused by the recent typhoon in the Philippines and wanted to help. So earlier this month, they asked for donations and sold coffee and baked goods to raise money to support the relief efforts. But of course, this is a fraternity, so they had to do something a little different. They hosted a "Pie a Pi Lam" event, in which they allowed people to hit them in the face with whipped cream pies for donations. All told, Pi Lambda Phi exceeded their $500 fundraising goal, donating a total of $640 to support the Red Cross relief efforts in the Philippines.

This, of course, is just example of the generosity shown by people here in the Western New York/Finger Lakes regions following Typhoon Haiyan and throughout the year. Because you Give Something That Means Something, we can support our neighbors in need down the street, across the country and around the world. Thank you!

This is the 13th year for the one-of-a-kind military themed event, which was recently named “Buffalo’s Best Annual Fundraiser” by Artvoice for the fifth time.  Over 4,000 BASH attendees get dressed up in their best military gear to sample food and drink from some of Buffalo’s best restaurants, and enjoy the music of Signature Entertainment’s DJ Mike Setlock, as well as a live performance by the one and only Lance Diamond.  Guests also get the the opportunity to bid on dozens of exciting auction items donated by members of the Western New York community, including original works of art, jewelry, gift certificates, and even vacations.  All proceeds from BASH*2011 will stay right here to help the American Red Cross provide vital disaster response and preparedness education in Western New York.

The only way to get into BASH*2011 is through the purchase of a $100 BASH Raffle ticket, which comes with:

Hip hip, hoorah!

Not one, not two, not three and not four… but FIVE! That’s right Buffalo; you’ve voted BASH the Best Annual Fundraiser for Artvoice’s Best of Buffalo FIVE times!!
For those of you who don’t know what BASH or Artvoice’s Best of Buffalo is, let us elaborate so that you can understand why we’re so darn excited!
Every year, Artvoice puts out a survey that allows anyone and everyone vote on what they like best in specific categories, i.e. Best Annual Fundraiser, Best Bagel, Best Bookstore, Best Open Mic, Best Painter, and Best Bar Only You Know About.
That’s a lot of categories! And, frankly I often have a hard time thinking of places to vote for each year, aside from our fabulous BASH of course, but Buffalo has honored us again with this Best of Title, and with the fierce competition with other Buffalo fundraisers, we couldn’t be prouder or happier!
Now, that’s all well and good, but for anyone that hasn’t been to BASH, you might be wondering… what the heck is this BASH thing, why is it winning awards, and how the heck do I get in?!
Well, let me start by saying, BASH is one of the biggest and best parties in Buffalo in the summer, and pretty much all year long! Over 4,000 people come together, to dance, drink, bid on some of amazing auction items, and be merry while enjoying one-of-a-kind military themed tents and more.
And the greatest part? All proceeds of the event stay right here in WNY to help with the American Red Cross’ disaster relief efforts!!
When is the BASH?
·         Friday June 3rd, 8:00pm-midnight
How do I get in?
The ONLY way to get into this event is through our BASH raffle.
·         1 raffle ticket/$100.00 gets you:
o   2 general admission tickets with admission at 8:00pm
o   2 drinks/person
o   All the fabulous food you can eat from our restaurant sponsors
o   PLUS the chance to win $10,000, $5,000 or $2,500!
Not good enough for you? Maybe you’re VIP worthy…
VIP's start the party at 6:00pm and get to enjoy the exclusive VIP tent with complimentary cocktails and even more amazing Buffalo food!
·         15 raffle tickets for $1,500 gets you 10 VIP tickets
·         20 raffle tickets for $2,000 gets you 13 VIP tickets
·         25 raffle tickets for $2,500 gets you 16 VIP tickets
·         30 raffle tickets for $3,000 gets you 20 VIP tickets
·         35 raffle tickets for $3,500 gets you 22 VIP tickets
·         40 raffle tickets for $4,000 gets you 24 VIP tickets
·         45 raffle tickets for $4,500 gets you 26 VIP tickets
·         50 raffle tickets for $5,000 gets you 30 VIP tickets
So, the more raffle tickets you buy, the more friends you can invite to be VIPs too!!
As you can see, we’re very excited for this upcoming event, and even more excited that all of you out there have recognized how much hard work we put into this amazing event by voting us the Best Annual Fundraiser.  We’re counting down the days to celebrate this victory and raise even more money for disaster relief here in WNY, and we hope to see you June 3rd to celebrate with us!

Making a difference at any age

Younger generations have been showing the world time and time again that regardless of their age, they too can make a difference.  Lockport High School is a great example of this.  The school’s musical, "Once On This Island,” showed Friday April 1st and Saturday April 2nd and they set aside a portion of the $10.00 ticket price to donate to the relief efforts in Japan.  They donated over $1,000.
Sarah Pevey, Marissa Parker, Zac Parker, Heather Filipowicz, William Tschaepe,
Erin Deeks, Katrina Rorick, Emmaline Lux
We are so thankful to have our younger generations working hand and hand with us at the American Red Cross.  They’re helping us further our mission and good work in the community, across the country and around the world.
If you would like to get involved with us at the American Red Cross, you can call us at 716-886-7500 to learn more about volunteer, fundraising and donation opportunities, or you can visit us online to learn more about all the services that your donations of time and money allow us to offer.

What is Row for the Red Cross?
Row for the Red Cross is a one-day event, which will be held on Sunday, March 6, 2011. You can stop by Buffalo's CrossFit gym at 3820 Union Road, Cheektowaga NY, 14225, or any CrossFit gym across New York State to row part of or an entire 5K on a Concept2 Rowing machine!  Participatants are asked to seek individual sponsorship for the distance that they choose to row, and all proceeds will benefit your local American Red Cross Chapter!
Individual Prizes!

•The individual that raises the most money, over $1000, will receive a certificate good for admission to a CrossFit Endurance Trainer certification class, courtesy of CrossFit Endurance.
•The top three fundraising individuals will receive a $50 gift certificate from Ranger Up.
•Any individual that raises over $1000 will receive a certificate for a free CPR/AED class offered by your local New York State Red Cross Chapter.
•All rowers who raise at least $100 will receive an event t-shirt from Ranger Up (pictured above!).
What is a CrossFit gym?
The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability, which makes it a perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. They have used the same routines, which dabble in combat, survival and different sports, for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. They scale load and intensity; they don't change programs.

Intimidated? Don't be! The CrossFit gym is a great place for individuals of all levels to come and work out, which is why we here at the Chapter are thankful to have them participating in this great fundraiser.

Did you mark June 3rd on your new 2011 calendar?

Can you feel it Buffalo? BASH is only 6 months away, and the planning is starting here at the Chapter!

This annual fundraiser has amazing food from some of Western New York’s top restaurants, the music of Lance Diamond, and is a one-of-a-kind military-themed event! It’s even been named Buffalo’s Best Annual Fundraiser in 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010 by ArtVoice and was the recipient of the 2007 Outstanding Event Award by Buffalo Niagara Event Professionals!
Last year’s BASH had over 4,000 people in attendance, we went through 3,800 grilled hotdogs and sausages, over 2.2 tons of ice, had 15 sheet pizzas delivered every half hour, and had too much fun to measure!  However the most important and gratifying part of the evening was that we raised over $340,000 for vital emergency services right here in Western New York.
So mark the calendar for June 3rd, 2011 and be sure to stay up to date with us by visiting www.redcrossbash.org, check back often, and Prepare to Party!
Want to be a VIP? BASH*2011 sponsors receive VIP tickets at each sponsorship level, increased media exposure for your company and exclusive early admission to the event.  Contact Jerilyn Hickey at 878-2383 or HickeyJe@usa.redcross.org to enlist today!

Feeling lucky? The BASH Raffle is for you! With only 1,000 tickets sold for $100 each, your odds of winning are great PLUS with each raffle ticket purchased you get 2 free general admission tickets to BASH*2011! New this year you can be a VIP by purchasing 15 raffle tickets and you will receive 10 VIP tickets instead of general admission tickets! We are also looking for volunteers to help us sell tickets. To buy or sell raffle tickets, please contact Heather Filipowicz at 878-2396 or FilipowiczH@usa.redcross.org.
